I was lucky enough to have a family that instilled values in me that I’ve lived by ever since.
A Vietnam veteran, Dad is the hardest working person I know, which accounts for my own work ethic. He also gave me a strong sense of personal responsibility.
Meanwhile, Mom had a long career as a Registered Nurse. She taught me how to be considerate to everyone, how to be creative in finding ways to help others. She showed by example how to truly care for people.
I spent the first 14 years of my career working for both small hospitality firms as well as Fortune 500 companies, most recently throughout Central Florida.
Not only did I love pampering people but also the idea in hospitality that these folks aren’t thought of as customers but rather as “guests.” That sets a tone that makes all the difference – between just pleasing people and making them absolutely delighted.

The time came to make a major change.
I had always had a fascination with the law, so I eventually relocated to Jacksonville where I enrolled in the Florida Coastal School of Law.
Once I had earned my J.D., I decided to create a new law firm that would be based on principles I learned from the hospitality industry. Unlike other firms, The DeVries Law Firm, P.A. would serve not clients but guests.
Success came quickly.
It turns out that people much preferred being treated as a guest than a client. They very much appreciated the respect and patience our firm showed. And we grew accordingly. Today, in addition to a diverse support staff of about a dozen outstanding specialists, I’m extremely proud of two lawyers and a paralegal who have joined the firm and contributed mightily. They include: Joe Scone is a military veteran who’s served the nation for most of his adult life, from the U.S. Marine Corps to his hometown National Guard to the U.S. Army. As a Veterans Rights Attorney, Personal Injury Attorney and Auto Accident Attorney, Joe adds his military-leaderships skills to his legal expertise to fight for people who have been hurt and treated unfairly. His strong personal motivation and sharp legal mind present a formidable force in the courtroom!
Josh Tyson brings us an extraordinary passion for justice and a deep desire to help people during times of personal crisis, as his focus is primarily on Family Practice Law, including divorce, child custody, child support, domestic violence, and alimony issues.
Recognition from his peers speaks volumes about Josh’s capabilities on behalf of his clients. His impressive accolades from within the legal community include being named a Top Ten Family Law Attorney in 2018 by Attorney and Practice magazine and 2019’s Top Five Divorce Attorney in Jacksonville by Folio magazine. Before joining us, Josh’s company was voted Best Law Firm in Jacksonville in 2016 and 2020 by Bold City Best.
Julienne Rolfe is a paralegal par excellence and a perfect fit for our firm. Her background in both insurance and hospitality means she already embodies our hospitality attitude. Very much detail-oriented, Julienne also has a keen eye for document drafting and review, and she’s highly adept at reviewing long contracts as well

As a member of the Florida bar, it’s an honor for me to serve as a Pro-bono Attorney for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. which helps those who cannot afford representation.
I’m also delighted to be the Vice President of Membership for the Jacksonville Junior Chamber of Commerce; to serve on the board for North Florida Susan G. Komenas; well as to be a member of Rotary International in the East Arlington Rotary Club.
Moreover, I devote as much time as possible to the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce; the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Arlington Toastmasters; Jacksonville Lawyers Roundtable; and MOCA Contemporaries.
Life after hours…
One of my great passions is running marathons. In addition to being a group leader for the Jacksonville Jeff Galloway Running Club, it’s been my tremendous privilege to be the pacer for the Breast Cancer Marathon and the Walt Disney World Marathon.
Finally, I want to pay special note to my better half, Molly and my daughter, Charlotte, for blessing me with their love, inspiration, joy in life and great senses of humor. Considering what a busy life I lead, that latter quality is essential for everyone who shares their world with me!
